Daimon Bistro

A visit to the sin city at the Bund.

Just about the right time to visit Alvin Leung’s new restaurant, Daimon Bistro, in Shanghai, he’s the man behind Bo Innovation and Bo Shanghai. Inspired by the Kowloon Walled City, the ungoverned settlement with high density, the interior imitated the walled city back in the days which gives a cinematic feel, also the ambiance is relatively free and unconstrained.

Since it is inspired by the Kowloon Walled City, of course it gives a nostalgic feeling. Staffs are all wearing different costumes playing different roles, service is good as they are friendly and they give good recommendations. The food and drinks here are unusual, such as the adult version alcoholic Vitasoy definitely brought back childhood memories with a grasp of reality. As a nonalcoholic I got the ordinary and yet tasty HK-style milk tea.

Dim sums are categorised into fun guo, little dragon baos, egg rolls, potsticker, and siu mai. I tried the Thai style chicken tom yum little dragon baos, and the East meet West Mui Choy foie gras potsticker, it sounds weird but the taste of the combinations are matching, in particular want to mention the bottom of potsticker is pan-fried so perfectly it is so crispy. The bbq pork milk bun with Mexican topping is the best char siu bao I’ve ever had, the bun is crispy outside and very soft inside.

The only dish I want to criticise is the yellow fin tuna tartare, the tamarind sauce is way too salty. For the main dish I ordered the one I know I certainly cannot finish and purely based on satisfying my curiosity, the fried chicken is a bit spicy, with the HK egg waffle, its sweetness does reduce the spiciness from the fried chicken. Desserts are back to normal, had the delicious lemon tart.

The food here does represent his point of view ‘food creation is borderless’ (printed on the mug).

It’s wicked, it’s playful, both the ambiance and the food.
